Maple Leafs complete 3 deals as off-season opens.

The Toronto Maple Leafs began the 2019-20 season with a flurry of roster moves. Toronto traded veteran forward Wayne Simmonds to the Carolina Hurricanes for a 2020 4th round pick. Then Toronto moved backup goalie Darcy Kuemper to the Sharks for their 1st round pick, 12th overall and minor league goalie Jared Coreau. Toronto also moved a 5th round pick for goaler Aaron Dell. "Obviously its a bitter sweet day for us," said GM Garrett Hansford. "Today we say goodbye to Wayne who has been a great leader on and off the ice for us and who we won the Cup with a year ago," continued Hansford. "The cap is what it is. As players mature and prove themselves they need raises. We have to make tough decisions to be able to fit everyone in sometimes." Kuemper proved to be a valuable back up last season, posting a 8-3-2 regular season record with a .924 save percentage. He also "Darcy will do great for San Jose and get some really good minutes. We're locked with Freddy as our goalie so the ability to add a high draft pick made sense," said Hansford. Toronto has been working behind the scenes to get pending unrestricted free agent forward Evgeni Malkin signed long term. "We expect Gino to check all his options before making a decision. We hope he's back, and we'll present him another offer when free agency opens. That's plan a. We'll see if we need to look at plan b as free agency progresses."
