The Toronto Maple Leafs announced the trade (pending OTHL approval) of forwards Brendan Gallagher and Tyler Pitlick to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Frank Vatrano, prospect Barrett Hayton, a 2021 first round pick and a 2022 2nd round pick. "I want to thank Brendan and Tyler for their time with the Maple Leafs," started GM Garrett Hansford at his media availability. "This has been a difficult season where we've had to make some tough decisions, and this was certainly one of them. We thought we were destined to many playoff runs with Brendan but this performance this season really forced us to look to the future." Vatrano joins the Maple Leafs with 16 goals and 22 assists in 56 games. Hayton was the 9th overall pick of the 2018 OTHL draft and was captain for Team Canada at this years World Junior Championship. He scored 6 goals and had 6 assists in 7 games leading Canada to the gold medal. "We are extremely excited to welcome a veteran like Frank to our roster, and we can't be more excited to land a prospect like Barrett. We think he's got a bright future here in Toronto, and we could see him as soon as next season depending on how things go down the stretch here," said Hansford. In addition, with the draft picks added Toronto holds 5 first round picks over the next 2 OTHL drafts. "We've got some capital we can use at the draft if we need," said Hansford. "We could hold them, or we could move one or 2 to add roster players down the road. We'll see how things play out."
